Where Do I Go to Detox From Alcohol?

August 12th, 2011

When you detox from alcohol, you will go through a process of ending your dependence on alcohol by allowing the substance to leave your body completely. The alcohol detox process should be overseen by an addiction specialist or a medical professional and it is the first step that happens before seeking treatment for alcohol addiction.

Detox from alcohol will involve dealing with alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Some of these symptoms include having “the shakes”, feeling jittery or nervousness along with general irritability and mood swings. One who is having withdrawal from alcohol may also experience depression or nightmares. Certain physical symptoms may also occur such as sweating, nausea, vomiting and a loss of appetite.

Because one of the most difficult hurdles for recovering alcoholics to overcome is withdrawal, it is recommended that one go to a treatment center that offers an in-house alcohol detox program. Detoxing from alcohol at home is not the best idea, as the length and even severity of the withdrawal symptoms can vary greatly from mild to intense depending heavily on the individual themselves as well as how much and how long they have been addicted to alcohol. It is not advised to give up alcohol “cold turkey” unless a medical professional or alcohol addiction specialist has been consulted.

The bottom line is, you will fare better going to an alcohol detox or rehab center to go through the detox period. How someone will feel as he or she goes through alcohol detox will vary greatly and will depend on the individual. Some people will experience very intense detox symptoms while others will go through it with little or even no issues at all. The difference is in the physiological make up of the person as well as how long he or she has been consuming and abusing alcohol.

Everyone’s situation is different, of course, so you can never predict how someone will be when the alcohol detox happens. It is always important to seek the help of a medical professional or addiction specialist before attempting to detox from alcohol or drugs, as it can be a very intense period for the person to deal with. Going through alcohol detox at home is rarely a good idea if you want to prevent relapse and actually get the person to commit to treatment. Check in your local area at different alcohol rehab centers or even out of state treatment centers that offer in-house detox programs as your best resource.

Top 5 Reasons to Choose an Alcohol Rehab Center in California

August 6th, 2011

Seeking treatment is difficult enough – and finding an alcohol treatment center that is just right for your situation can seem like a big deal. If you have considered going out of state for alcohol treatment, California is a good choice for many people for a variety of reasons. Let’s take a look at what makes California a top contender when choosing an alcohol rehab center:

#1 – Weather and Setting

The weather alone is a great reason to choose an alcohol rehab center in California. You’ll find that a tropical setting with warmer weather can make for a more pleasant experience when you have to go through a difficult time in rehab. Being in California for alcohol rehab means you won’t have to deal with below freezing temperatures and you can enjoy the outdoors when you really need a breath of fresh air.

#2 – Looking for Serenity?

Many of the alcohol and drug rehab facilities in California offer a more luxurious experience than you can expect in other rehabs across the nation. You can find alcohol rehabs in California that are very resort-like in many aspects but that will still provide all of the staff support and treatment needed to get sober. You will be out of your comfort zone, away from distractions you would face in your own neighborhood but when seeking treatment for an addiction, that can be a very good thing. Alcohol rehabs in California offer a serenity that many other facilities can not provide, simply because of where they are located.

#3 – Holistic Treatment Programs

If you are seeking holistic treatment for alcohol addiction, California is definitely the place to go. Many of the facilities provide the holistic experience you are seeking. These programs are excellent, as they address the person as a whole with a mind-body treatment program that will help with physical, psychological, and emotional problems in addition to the patient’s addiction issues. The experience of the staff members offering holistic treatment at facilities in California may prove to be exactly what you are looking for.

#4 – Experience with Dual Diagnosis

Because California is a major area for the recovery community, the staff members are very experienced in dealing with multiple issues besides just addiction. If you have other issues to deal with (a co-occurring disorder), an alcohol rehab in California will provide the treatment you need in all aspects of your recovery to help reduce the occurrence of relapse.

#5 – A Strong Sober Community

California has one of the strongest sober communities in the nation, and it is a great place to find like-minded people who value their drug and alcohol free lives. The level of aftercare available to those who complete an alcohol treatment program in California is unsurpassed and there are programs available for all ages. Addiction specialists and AA meetings can be found nearby no matter where you are in California and it is a great place to be once your treatment is complete.

How Much Does Alcohol Treatment Cost?

July 23rd, 2011

With the need for alcohol treatment everywhere, there are many treatment centers where those with alcohol addiction problems can seek help. Unfortunately, there is no set cost for alcohol treatment. The cost of alcohol rehab varies depending not only on the state or region you are in, but also on the type of facility. Some are very clinical while others are quite luxurious like a spa resort. Another factor that can affect the cost of alcohol treatment is whether you choose outpatient care (the less expensive option) or inpatient residential care (the more expensive choice). Additionally, how long you remain in treatment will affect the cost as well.

There are a variety of alcohol treatment programs that exist to help those who struggle with alcoholism. It all depends on the individual. What you will find is that initially, alcohol treatment will involve an evaluation, often an intervention, counseling sessions, and possibly a residential inpatient stay. You will also need to go through a period of detox.

The first assessment for the patient, including and examination and a consultation along with some other tests may run in the ballpark of $100. For individual sessions, you will receive personal counseling and if there are family related issues, the cost per session is also around $100. If you ask your treatment center, you will sometimes find that if you commit to several sessions you can get a discount of about twenty percent.

If you are looking for a family treatment program, there are those that are designed to help entirely families with alcohol related issues. Each session runs about $120, give or take – depending on the facility and region where you live. As far as after care, you will want to keep seeking outpatient care to avoid a relapse and keep in touch with a support group. Each of these sessions will be up to $50.

On average, for intensive residential alcohol rehab you are looking at anywhere from $8,000-$12,000.

Some medications in alcohol rehab will also cost you some money. There are injectable drugs to treat alcohol dependence such as Vivitrol which will be administered by a health care professional. This medication helps to decrease the urge to drink by blocking neurotransmitters that go to the brain. It does not however help with alcohol withdrawal symptoms. The cost of Vivitrol medication is typically around $700 for just one injection.

As you can see, cost of alcohol treatment varies. If you have a relapse, some programs will help you at least somewhat for free or a lower cost. Keep in mind that your health insurance may help you to cover the cost of the programs.

Can I use TriCare Insurance for Drug Rehab?

July 16th, 2011

Members of the military who are struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction often wonder if their TriCare Insurance will cover the cost of drug rehab. Whether you have TriCare Medical Insurance, TriCare Standard, or TriCare Extra – you can use it for drug rehab. Coverage will vary from plan to plan as far as out of pocket expenses, so you will need to contact TriCare directly for details or work with a drug rehab in your area that accepts TriCare to find out what your plan pays.

A lot of drug rehabs are quite experienced with using TriCare Insurance for drug rehab due to the high number of military members who have needed assistance for alcohol or drug addiction. It can happen because of excessive use of alcohol due to job related stress or even because of abuse of prescriptions taken following a war injury – whatever the reason for needing detox or treatment – TriCare will help you to cover the cost and get your life back. TriCare insurance for drug rehab will be able to assist you, your spouse, or your children.

You may seek treatment in your local area or TriCare insurance may even help you get treatment in a facility that is out-of-state, which many people prefer. Sometimes getting out of your regular environment and into a completely new setting is the best way to go because all outside distractions are removed. Especially if family and friends are one of your “triggers” to using drugs or alcohol, going out of state for treatment may be your best bet. Major recovery areas such as Florida, Arizona, California, and Texas are known to have some of the most comprehensive and effective drug rehabs in the country, so it may be worth it to check out some outside of your home town.

Some of the TriCare plans do have high out of pocket expenses, so you may need to be prepared to pay some of the costs of treatment on your own. If this is the case, don’t be afraid to ask friends and family for assistance – more than likely they will be glad you are getting help and will be happy to provide whatever they can for you. There are also payment plans and payment arrangements that can be made with drug rehabs for out of pocket costs, all you have to do is ask what your options are.

5 Reasons You Should Seek Alcohol Treatment

June 24th, 2011

For a person who is not addicted to alcohol, a drinking problem seems like a small problem – one that can be stopped at any time with just a little willpower. Stop doing it, and your life will go back to normal. Ahhhh – if it were so easy, there would not be the plethora of alcohol treatment centers across the nation so that addicts can quit under supervision. If you have ever endured an addiction, you surely know how hard it can be to stop. Help is often required. Those who abuse a substance such as alcohol are not even always aware they are doing it – that’s why stopping doesn’t seem like it would be a difficult thing to do if they really wanted to. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Here are five reasons one should seek alcohol treatment:

Willpower Becomes Meaningless

Addiction to any substance, such as alcohol, causes changes in your brain which renders your willpower useless. When you become chemically dependent and addicted – the choices that normal people make do not occur normally. An addiction to alcohol or drugs basically means a loss of control over ones own actions. A very fortunate few are able to stop the addiction alone. When you are treated by addiction professionals, they can give you a better understanding of what is happening to your mental state and give you the tools to deal the chemical dependency.

Enforced Sobriety

In alcohol rehabilitation centers, in addition to the therapies offered, simply staying out of touch from any form of alcohol for a good month or so has its own super power. Your mind starts to become clearer, alcohol sobriety can only come with time. Enforced sobriety in a rehab setting can give your brain a change to relax and heal and also give you a chance to relearn how to live life in a sober manner. You may even begin to notice the little things you used to enjoy but had forgotten about.

Minimize Your Temptations

An addiction to any substance happens deep within ones subconscious, one that we can not always control. When a person is addicted, it appears that we are acting in a willful manner but in fact the actions we make are simply impulses derived from a deeper part of the brain. There is nothing except time and sobriety that will allow one’s psyche to heal all of the damage that was done during the addicted phase. Through consistent therapies at an alcohol rehab center, addicts will learn cognitive behavioral techniques that help them to control their actions, thoughts and impulses so that temptations are greatly reduced.

Therapists and Doctors Create a Relapse Prevention Plan

In your first few weeks and months of being sober, it’s not good to leave anything up to chance. To stay on your goals to remain sober, what you learn in rehab is a prevention plan that will help you not to relapse. If you feel you can not resist temptation, you will be given numbers and hotlines to call to speak with someone to work through the situation and to inspire you to stay sober.
Derive Inspiration From Others

When you attempt recovery in a group setting, you are with people who are in the same boat. They suffer the same pains and temptations and as you watch them recover, you can certainly derive inspiration from their triumphs. You can even learn from the staff, who many at some point were addicts themselves, and learn from others. Learn what worked for them and use it to work to your advantage. Recovery never seems impossible when you see a group of people recovering right before your very eyes.

How Long Does Drug Rehab Take?

June 20th, 2011

Drug rehabilitation treatment will vary from program to program. This will factor in a lot of different things such as available resources in the community, the willingness of the addict to complete a treatment program, and the intensity of addiction. A detox program, which is the initial drug rehab treatment, can start with just a three day commitment. On the other hand, a more common option is a twelve-step program which requires a lifelong commitment to attend meetings in a group setting. If you are looking at it from a realistic perspective, drug rehab will take as long as it takes – which will be different from person to person. While one particular addict may only need the initial detox period to shake their habit, another may need to enter into a residential facility to get clean and sober.

The fastest that drug rehab can take is the amount of time it takes for the substance to leave the body completely. If the addict will be put into a medical type of facility, a physician can manage the rehabilitation and help to treat any withdrawal symptoms as the patient goes through the detoxification process. When alcohol is the problem, detox can take a few short days. When it comes to drugs, especially those such as methamphetamine or heroin, it can require at least a week. It is important to keep in mind however that the detox period is only the first step to a long term maintenance program to prevent relapse.

An in-patient residency drug rehab program will provide a patient with treatment for a certain number of days. It is usually a preset amount – which can vary largely based on what a person’s health insurance or personal budget can cover. In this situation, the addict will sign up to live in the facility from thirty to ninety days and at that time upon completion of their treatment they are discharged. The next step is follow-up or aftercare which can last for several months or even for a lifetime if the person feels as though they need it to remain clean and sober.

Sometimes when the treatment is completed, an addict can move into a long-term housing situation. These are called sober houses or halfway houses. It’s somewhat of a structured living arrangement that is a drug-free environment that can be a major help in keeping a newly treated addict from going back to their old habits. Sometimes people live in this type of setting for up to a year and it is a great option for any addict that has had a history of incarceration for drugs or for those who find it difficult to keep a job or even for any addicts who may have the chance of becoming homeless after treatment is over. This transitional housing does offer group therapy and is just one more step to a drug free life.

Overall, the amount of time that drug rehab lasts will depend on the individual and is not the same for everyone.

June 14th, 2011

Addiction treatment is not just for alcohol and drugs. People can be prone to addiction to many other things that would require a treatment program in order to stop. Ten types of addiction that you can easily find treatment programs for include:

Drugs or Alcohol Addiction and Treatment

Obviously, drug rehabs exist to help people get over their addiction to drugs and alcohol. In addition to twelve-step programs, there are various types of treatment programs that will help address an addiction to drugs or alcohol.

Sex or Porn Addiction and Treatment

Sex addiction can threaten a marriage or family and ruin many lives. It is an addiction that many try to hide due to its very nature, so getting someone to seek treatment may be more complicated. Same goes for a porn addiction, as many are ashamed and would rather keep their behavior a secret. Addiction treatment is prevalently available, and it’s confidential & anonymous.

Food Addiction and Treatment

A food addiction is nothing to take lightly, as someone’s health can become a great risk. Obesity and over-eating are leading causes of health failure and diseases such as diabetes and heart problems; many people have died from both. Those who need to seek help from a food addiction can do so as soon as they are ready to take the first step.

Love Addiction and Treatment

Love addiction or relationship addiction can lead to obsessive behavior that is detrimental to all involved. This type of addiction has the ability to consume a person’s life but it can be overcome in a supportive therapy program for addiction, or even a twelve-step program. Love or relationship sobriety can be a challenge, but not an impossible one.

Shopping Addiction and Treatment

Definitely not a laughing matter, especially when a shopping addiction threatens to ruin a person or family’s financial security or when hoarding is involved. While not traditionally thought of as an addictive thing, shopping can produce a high that is felt just as strongly as any other drug when a purchase is made. All too quickly the high fades and the addict is back to shopping and spending money they don’t have on something they don’t need. Professional counseling in an addiction treatment program can salvage what seems like a problem as big as a black hole and help is just a phone call away.

Internet Addiction and Treatment

Most people use the internet on a daily basis, sometimes for hours at a time. So what dictates an internet addiction? When it comes down to it, the internet is a way to be very productive and to communicate at the speed of light. If internet use becomes a time waster and begins to consume all of your free time and is interfering with your personal or professional life – you may be addicted. It may be time you stopped losing track of your time while online and seek help through an available internet addiction treatment program.

Video Games Addiction and Treatment

This addiction often starts at a young age when parents use television and video games as babysitters instead of spending quality time with their children. Video game addiction can stretch out into adulthood and cause problems with the person’s social life and even their professional life. This impulse control disorder can be treated with the proper addiction treatment program that helps the addict find other ways to fill his or her time and to help them lead more full and satisfying lives.

Whatever addiction you suffer from, there is a treatment program that can help. Never feel like you are alone; there are so many who are literally in the same boat as you. Just reach out and you will find a treatment program that suits your needs.

4 Ways to Pay for Alcohol Rehabilitation

June 13th, 2011

When you are choosing to stop drinking, you are doing yourself and your friends & family a huge favor. Alcohol rehabilitation is not free though, so you will also have to decide how you are going to pay for the treatment. There are 4 ways to pay for alcohol rehabilitation that are commonly used including the following:

Health Insurance

If you have health insurance, there is a really good chance that alcohol rehab will be covered, at least in part, by your plan. There are forty states that actually require health plans to cover alcohol rehabilitation in which they must meet legal limits of coverage to ensure people can get treatment for such problems without a lot of out of pocket expenses. There may be limitations that you need to be aware of in order to make the most of your health insurance when seeking alcohol treatment, so be sure to call and speak to someone directly to get all of the details pertaining to what your plan will pay out. There may even be specific treatment centers that are affiliated with your insurance company, so ask for recommendations on treatment centers that they work with to help the process go more smoothly.

Self-Payment

When you have the means to pay for alcohol treatment on your own, you are one of the most fortunate – especially if you do not have health insurance. When looking at pricing, remember that cheapest is not always the best choice. You should call the different alcohol rehabilitation centers you are interested in going to and find out as much as you can about them and what they charge. Ask about their treatment methods, their in-patient and out-patient programs, follow-up support when treatment is over, and what is included in their rates.

Help from Family & Friends

Sometimes when health insurance or self-payment is not an option, seeking help from family and/or friends to pay for alcohol rehabilitation is a good alternative. Whether its one person or many people that can help out, every little bit helps. Don’t be afraid to ask for their help, as many of them will probably be more than happy to do so in order for you to get the treatment you need to stop drinking and get your life in order.

Payment Plans/Arrangements

Some alcohol rehabilitation centers may offer payment arrangements to help you with the affordability aspect of seeking treatment. Call and ask the treatment centers that you are interested in about payment plans which could help you get into alcohol rehab more quickly and allow you to pay as you go, whether the payments are weekly or monthly.

However you choose to pay, getting into treatment is the most important thing. Try not to be discouraged if one form of payment does not work out, as you do have alternatives.
